How to Measure Solar Shades
Or Any Type of Horizontal Roller Shade
The solar shades will be custom-manufactured to the size you provide to us, therefore accurate measurements are necessary.
The sizes will be confirmed verbally over the phone, by fax or email.
Have on hand a steel measuring tape, paper, pencil and possibly, a step ladder for measurements.
Follow These Tips
Depth of the Window
The depth of the window may influence whether you choose an inside mount.
Inside Mount - Measure Width
For an inside mount, the window opening must have enough unobstructed depth (2-inches) to allow for mounting the shade.
We usually recommend an inside mount when possible because it provides a cleaner look.
When you specify an inside mount, the factory will make a size deduction to allow for operating clearance. The deductions are made so that the shade will not rub or scratch your window frame.
Measure the width of the window.
Measure the exact width at the top, middle and bottom, recording the exact widths - Do Not make any deductions.
For a Flush Inside Mount (the shade completely recessed so that no part of the shade projects out of the opening) check that you have enough mounting depth of 2-1/2-inches.
Inside Mount - Measure Height
Measure the height of the window top to bottom on the left, right, and center recording the longest height.
Do not make any deductions.
Outside Mount - Measure Width
An outside mount can make the window appear larger or hide an unattractive windows.
If you specify an outside mount, the factory will not take any size deductions. Your shade will be made at the exact size you specify.
Do not be surprised if your windows aren't square. Many aren't. If they're a little out of square, it probably won't be noticeable.
The window covering will hang outside the actual window frame, and should overlap the window frame enough for maximum privacy and light blockage.
Measure the width of the window.
Measure to the outside edge of the molding.
For greater coverage add 2 to 3 inches to each side.
Outside Mount - Measure Height
Measure 2-inches above and 2-inches below the window.
For a Cloth Measurement
For exact fabric coverage, provide the fabric measurement and the shades as cloth measurement.
Otherwide, all measurements are Bracket to Bracket unless specified as Cloth Measurement.
Please give sizes in inches.
The shade roller will be 1-1/8" wider than the fabric.
Helpful Measuring Information
Width (left to right) always comes first, then Height (top to bottom).
Reverse Roll is when the fabric feeds over the front of the roller.
Standard Roll is when fabric feeds over the back of the roller.
Railroading on the shades can be done when shade width exceeds fabric width (the fabric is turned on end so you end up with a horizontal seam near the top of the shade).
